The hype around CBD.
More and more people are using CBD every year. Cannabidiol market (CBD) is growing rapidly [1]. In 2022, every 4th American had tried CBD [2]. In Europe, 1 in 10 has used CBD in the past 12 months [3]. The most popular form of cannabidiol product is CBD-oil [4]. But in addition to oil, CBD
has been added to cosmetics, food, beverages, and pet products. The variety of products with cannabidiol is fascinating, for example, there are toothpicks [5] and even sheets with CBD [6, 7]. The impressive speed with which CBD popularity is growing makes some wonder if it is all just a hype [8, 9]? Is CBD really that useful?
Spoiler alert: Yes, CBD is really good, and it's also safe [10].
Hype around CBD is based on scientific research.
CBD effectiveness has been proven by numerous experiments and clinical studies [11]. CBD (10-% solution of cannabidiol in sesame oil) is FDA approved drug for the treatment of two rare syndromes of childhood epilepsy [12]. A mixture of CBD+THC is prescribed for muscle pain in multiple sclerosis [13]. It is also experimentally proven that CBD has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect [14].
Cannabidiol also is an antioxidant and it protects neurons from toxic free radicals [15]. These effects make CBD beneficial for the elderly people, as well as those suffering from neurological disorders [16, 17]. There is also increasing evidence that CBD is an effective anxiolytic—that is, CBD reduces anxiety [18].
Scientists continue to study therapeutic effects of CBD. CBD action is currently being investigated for the treatment of various health conditions, including covid-19, epilepsy, substance abuse and addiction, schizophrenia, social phobia, PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, and Parkinson's disease [11].
What is the "secret" of CBD?
How does CBD have so many therapeutic properties? Unlike many other substances that impact a certain molecule or receptor in the body, CBD has more than 70 cellular targets. CBD modulates the function of various receptors, enzymes and ion channels on the cell membrane [19]. This accounts for the wide range of CBD therapeutic action. While cannabidiol can be effective in small doses (30 – 60 mg/day), it is also safe at very high doses (600 – 1000 mg/day). The absence of psychoactive action and extremely low toxicity makes CBD a "wonder supplement" for everyone: from children to elderly.
It appears that CBD "hype" is fully justified — so many people buy CBD because so many of us need CBD: cannabidiol is useful, effective and has zero potential for abuse [20].
