How to distinguish genuine CBD from a fake: 5 signs and the key document
Over the past year, the market for cannabidiol (CBD) products in Ukraine has expanded far more rapidly than regulatory bodies have been able to establish quality standards and define the "rules of the game." Labels feature enticing claims—ranging from "clinically tested" and "100% organic" to "premium-grade formula"—yet a significant portion of these assurances bears no relation to the product's actual contents.
Let us look at lessons learned globally regarding CBD-related consumer pitfalls and what to consider before purchasing CBD products in Ukraine.
Labeling in the USA: Why label claims shouldn't be taken at face value
In 2017, the journal *JAMA* published the results of a study by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, who tested 84 CBD products from 31 brands. They found that nearly 70% of the products contained inaccurate information regarding their cannabidiol content [1]. In a quarter of the samples, the actual concentration was lower than stated; in some instances, the compound accounted for less than 1% of the indicated amount.
A subsequent, larger-scale study covered 202 products (including oils, gummies, vape liquids, and topicals):
- 26% of the products did not match their stated composition type ("full-spectrum," "broad-spectrum," or "isolate");
- 74% of the samples deviated from the declared CBD concentration by more than 10% [2].
Researchers in Kentucky observed a similar pattern: out of 80 tested products, only 54% matched the declared concentration within a ±10% margin of error [3]. As the market for high-quality CBD products grows, so too does the presence of unscrupulous players worldwide—and Ukraine is no exception.
Labeling in Ukraine: Signs of Unscrupulous Practices
We recommend avoiding the purchase of CBD products if you notice the following warning signs:
1. The manufacturer (legal entity) is not listed or is identified unclearly.
2. A product quality certificate or manufacturer's declaration is missing and cannot be provided upon request.
3. The cannabidiol content (in mg) is not listed; instead, the label mentions terms like hemp seed oil/extract, natural hemp raw material, "hemp," etc.
4. Information regarding the batch number, expiration date, and manufacturing facility address is missing from the packaging.
5. The price is significantly lower than the market average.
The Age-Old Trap: CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil
While CBD oil and hemp oil originate from the same plant—hemp—they are fundamentally different products in terms of composition.
· Hemp oil is produced from hemp seeds; its beneficial properties are derived from its fatty acid profile. Hemp oil can serve as a carrier oil for CBD oils if CBD is added to the formulation.
· CBD (cannabidiol) is a substance with a specific chemical formula—a compound found in the *Cannabis sativa* plant. The CBD molecule has been studied for nearly a century, with research consistently demonstrating its high therapeutic potential.
· CBD oil is the most common form of CBD product worldwide [4]. Cannabidiol is dissolved in a carrier oil—such as hemp oil, sea buckthorn oil, or others. MCT oil is considered the best option; it is a dietary product derived from a lighter fraction of coconut oil.
Therefore, if "cannabidiol" is not listed among the ingredients on the packaging, do not expect to experience the therapeutic effects of CBD from that oil.
The manufacturer's key document regarding CBD quality
In addition to the label, an important document issued by an independent third party is the Certificate of Analysis (COA). This is an official report from an independent laboratory verifying the substance's actual composition. If a manufacturer cannot provide this document upon request, it means the cannabidiol content has not been verified.
A comprehensive COA must include:
The name and details of the laboratory that conducted the analysis
The raw material batch number and testing date
The cannabinoid profile, including CBD and THC content and the limit of detection
Measurement methodology and the signatures of responsible personnel
Test results regarding purity and safety (absence of heavy metals, pesticides, etc.)
