CBD: from stigma to scientific recognition

The path of cannabidiol (CBD) to official recognition was long and thorny, as this compound remained in the shadow of strict prohibitions and social stereotypes for decades. Only through the persistent work of researchers was humanity able to separate the plant's medical potential from its psychoactive impact.

Early research and renewed interest

The pioneer of cannabidiol was Harvard graduate and chemist Roger Adams, who isolated the substance back in 1940, predating the discovery of THC by twenty-five years [1]. In the 1960s, scientists finally established the exact chemical structure of the compound, which provided the first substantial evidence of its therapeutic value, particularly its ability to significantly alleviate the condition of patients with epilepsy [2]. Despite these discoveries, the development of the field was artificially suppressed by policies of criminalization and mass misinformation.

Positive changes in the legislative landscape began at the end of the last century in the United States of America. A major milestone was 1996, when California became the first state to legalize the use of cannabis for medical purposes [3]. This created a precedent, thanks to which 36 other American states and dozens of countries across various continents eventually allowed the use of cannabinoids for patient treatment [4].

CBD against childhood epilepsy

A special place in the history of cannabidiol’s recognition is held by the case of Charlotte Figi from Colorado, whose struggle for life changed the world's attitude toward this substance. The girl, born in 2006, suffered from catastrophic epileptic seizures from early childhood; by age five, their frequency reached 300 episodes per day [5]. Due to constant seizures, Charlotte lost the ability to speak, walk, and eat on her own, while traditional medications proved not only ineffective but also toxic to her development.

Salvation came in the form of oil from a specific strain of hemp that had a high concentration of CBD and contained almost no psychoactive THC. The very first dose of the preparation stopped the seizures for an entire night, and over time, their number was reduced to 2–3 cases per month. It was the publicity of Charlotte's story that became the catalyst forcing the global community to re-evaluate the safety and effectiveness of cannabidiol [6].

CBD receives recognition in 2018

Global recognition of CBD's status was finally solidified in 2018, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epidiolex, a drug intended for the treatment of complex forms of epilepsy in children [7]. That same year, the World Health Organization released an official report confirming the safety of the substance and its lack of potential for addiction or abuse [8].

In parallel, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances for athletes [9], and the U.S. legally permitted the industrial cultivation of industrial hemp with a THC content below 0.3% [10]. A logical conclusion to this stage was the UN decision in 2020 to remove products with a THC content of less than 0.2% from strict international control [11].

Today, the cannabidiol market demonstrates impressive dynamics: in 2021, its volume exceeded $3 billion, and analysts predict this figure could grow by another $30 billion over the next five years [12].

The popularity of CBD products is driven by their wide range of applications, as according to surveys:

  • 40% of consumers use them to reduce pain
  • 20% — to combat anxiety
  • 11% — to normalize sleep
  • 8% — to relieve symptoms of arthritis [13].

Thus, thanks to a scientific approach and real patient stories, cannabidiol has transformed from a stigmatized substance into a globally recognized remedy, returning hemp to its status as one of the most beneficial plants for humanity.
