10 Areas of CBD’s impact on the body: calmness despite everything

In the modern reality of Ukraine, where every citizen faces unprecedented pressure while contributing to the effort toward victory, the issue of maintaining one's own resources and psycho-emotional resilience becomes critically important. One of the reliable tools for harmonizing physiological processes is cannabidiol (CBD)—a natural compound that lacks psychoactive effects but demonstrates a powerful therapeutic impact on the human body [1]. The effectiveness of CBD is primarily due to its influence on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates sleep, mood, and immunity. Unlike THC, CBD does not bind directly to receptors; instead, it indirectly increases the level of the body's own cannabinoids, such as anandamide [2].

1.     Reducing anxiety levels

Of primary importance is cannabidiol's ability to effectively reduce anxiety levels, which affects one in three people at some point in their lives. Preclinical studies confirm that this substance helps overcome panic attacks, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorders [3]. Interestingly, the therapeutic effect can be either immediate—for example, taking 300 mg of the compound significantly eases the state during public speaking [4]—or cumulative, where daily consumption of moderate doses (15-17 mg/day) over a month stabilizes the emotional background and improves sleep without any adverse consequences [5].

2.     Pain relief

CBD acts as a powerful analgesic capable of soothing chronic, muscular, and headaches [6]. Unlike traditional pharmaceutical drugs, cannabidiol is non-addictive, allowing it to be used for long periods without the need to constantly increase the dosage.

3.     Antioxidant action

An important feature of CBD is its pronounced antioxidant activity, which allows it to effectively combat free radicals - molecules that accelerate aging and destroy cellular structures [7, 8]. In terms of its properties in neutralizing oxidative stress, cannabidiol is 30–50% ahead of such well-known antioxidants as vitamins C and E [9].

4.     Neuroprotective action

The antioxidant properties of CBD are closely related to its neuroprotective action: the compound increases the functional activity of brain cells [10]. It prevents pathological changes in tissues and restores the balance of neurotransmitters, which is extremely important for the prevention of degenerative processes in the nervous system [11].

5.     Improving sleep quality

In people with insomnia, levels of cortisol—the stress hormone—rise at night, further intensifying anxiety before falling asleep. CBD helps normalize this process by reducing nocturnal cortisol peaks [12]. A large-scale analysis of scientific research also confirmed that CBD is capable of reducing the manifestations of insomnia. More than half of the studies reviewed recorded a noticeable improvement in sleep quality among participants who took CBD-based preparations [13].

6.     Depression prevention

CBD demonstrates potential in combating depressive states by influencing serotonin receptors. Compared to standard antidepressants, positive changes from CBD intake occur much faster and are not accompanied by toxic side reactions [14].

7.     Reducing inflammation

Many dangerous pathologies originate specifically in prolonged inflammatory processes. The most aggressive manifestation is the cytokine storm—a rapid and massive release of inflammatory agents that causes tissue damage. In fact, this mechanism was recognized as one of the leading causes of high mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic [15]. In the fight against such conditions, cannabidiol demonstrates exceptional effectiveness, as the ability to suppress inflammation and harmonize the immune system's function is one of its key properties [9].

8.     Supporting the cardiovascular system

Cardiovascular diseases consistently top the list of the most common causes of death in the world. Cannabidiol exerts a cardioprotective effect: it relaxes vessel walls, protects them from damage, and helps the heart maintain a normal rhythm even under stressful conditions [16].

9.     Normalizing digestion

Stress, alcohol consumption, or the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen) often provoke damage to the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines [17]. CBD has a positive effect on the digestive system [18]:

·       reduces inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract;

·       protects the mucous membrane from damage;

·       reduces discomfort;

·       helps normalize digestive processes. 

10.  Overall improvement of well-being

All these diverse effects are made possible through the activation of the endocannabinoid system and the increased concentration of the body's own protective compounds—anandamide and 2-AG [19]. Such a comprehensive approach to health regulation allows a person to feel better every day, maintaining productivity and internal balance even in the most difficult circumstances.
